Phage Therapy Targets Resistant Infections in Cancer Patients.
New research is emerging on the use of bacteriophage therapy for treating antibiotic-resistant infections in cancer patients. These patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, are often immunocompromised and highly susceptible to infections. Unfortunately, many cancer patients develop infections that are resistant to the standard antibiotics used in treatment, posing a significant risk to their health.
Phage therapy presents a novel solution by specifically targeting drug-resistant bacteria while sparing the beneficial microbiota. Researchers are focusing on developing protocols that integrate bacteriophages into the care of cancer patients, particularly for combating infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. Early studies indicate that phage therapy not only reduces infection rates but does so without causing severe side effects, making it a promising addition to the oncological care regiment.
